Waveshare ESP32-S3 E Paper Display

Key Features

Dual-core LX7 processing clocks up to 240 MHz for steady performance. E Ink Spectra 6 panels deliver sharp contrasts without backlight flicker. Integrated audio chips handle recording and playback tasks natively.

Product Description

This compact board combines a microcontroller with a high-resolution electronic paper screen. You gain direct access to 16 MB flash storage and 8 MB PSRAM for rapid image caching. Wireless antennas sit directly on the board for stable signal transmission.

Product Overview

The device targets learners and makers exploring embedded systems. It replaces bulky monitors with lightweight screens that consume zero power when static. Classroom labs and personal workbenches benefit immediately from streamlined prototyping.

Key Benefits

You cut assembly time by ditching extra wireless dongles. Built-in memory prevents buffer overflow during graphic rendering. Stable connections keep your debug logs consistent across longer coding sessions.

Features

Xtensa architecture ensures efficient instruction execution. Low energy modes protect components during idle periods. Clean header pins simplify jumper wire routing for beginners.

Specifications

Model designation reads ESP32-S3-PhotoPainter. Internal memory splits between 512 KB SRAM and 384 KB ROM. Operating voltage supports standard 3.3 V logic gates. Chemical composition avoids high-concern hazardous substances.

What’s Included

Your shipment contains the main development board only. No rechargeable cells or protective sleeves enter the box. Mounting holes align perfectly with standard acrylic stands.

How to Use

Route 3.3 V power through designated input pins to start compilation. Upload sketches directly from your computer using common serial drivers. Adjust display refresh rates manually through configuration menus.

Customer Benefits

Students grasp core computing concepts faster with visible feedback loops. Educators demonstrate low-power design principles accurately. Hobbyists iterate physical prototypes without burning through expensive parts.

Ideal Uses

Track environmental sensor readings outside direct sunlight. Power interactive learning kiosks that require minimal maintenance. Showcase static data dashboards at technical workshops or maker fairs.

Who It’s For

Computer science majors building capstone projects appreciate the clear API documentation. Electronics instructors guide hands-on labs safely. Independent designers testing wearable interfaces gain reliable tactile feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the board arrive pre-programmed with demo software?

No, you load your preferred framework fresh onto the empty memory partitions.

Can I pair multiple units simultaneously for group projects?

Yes, Bluetooth 5 LE handles multi-device network topologies securely.

What cable type connects this screen to my laptop?

Standard micro USB cables supply both power and data transfer pathways.

How does thermal management work during extended loads?

Copper traces draw heat away from processors without requiring active fans.

Is replacement glass necessary after regular classroom handling?

E Ink materials resist scratches better than traditional LCD touch layers.

Does a pretty nice job, at least with the alternative firmware recommented in another comment (google esp32 photoframe). The original one is horrible. Usage is quite confusing, and it didn't even display the pictures from the storage card when according to the (very poor) manual it should. At first i even was worried the display might be broken because it simply stayed white. Flashing the alternative is a bit cumbersome (had to install some drivers and reboot a few times until it worked), but doable.

While the spectra 6 is currently the best eink display for pictures, it's still far from an lcd display. The resolution is low and the dynamics are still very limited.

The photopainter also requires some assembly. It's not too complicated (stick battery + speaker, plug some cables), but some short instructions to be sure i don't do anything wrong would've been nice.
